The “Veteran of Labor” medal (Медаль «Ветеран труда») was an award of the Soviet Union established by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on January 18, 1974. It was awarded to workers, collective farmers, and employees who had worked for a long time (at least 20 years for men and 15 years for women) and had an impeccable work record, and who were already receiving pensions. The medal was intended to recognize long and exemplary service in the Soviet economy, science, culture, education, healthcare, and state services.
The medal itself is circular, made of a silver-colored alloy, and features a central image of the hammer and sickle, symbolizing the unity of workers and peasants, surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves. The inscription “ВЕТЕРАН ТРУДА” is prominently displayed on a ribbon at the bottom. The ribbon attached to the medal is a distinctive pattern of red and white stripes, representing the Soviet flag and the purity of labor. This award was a significant recognition of an individual’s contribution to the Soviet state.
