The Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) was the part of World War II fought by the Soviet Union against the Axis powers. It began with the invasion of the Soviet Union by Nazi Germany on June 22, 1941, and ended with the unconditional surrender of Germany on May 8, 1945. The war resulted in immense loss of life and devastation across the Soviet Union.

This medal, the “25 Years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War” jubilee medal, was established in 1970 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Soviet victory. It was awarded to veterans who participated in the Great Patriotic War, as well as to military and civilian personnel who contributed to the victory. The design features iconic Soviet symbols and imagery related to the war effort.
