The Order of the Patriotic War was a Soviet military decoration established by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on May 20, 1942, during World War II. It was the first Soviet order awarded during the war and was given to all soldiers and commanders of the Soviet Armed Forces who participated in the Great Patriotic War. The order was awarded in two classes: First Class and Second Class.

The design of the Order of the Patriotic War features a red enameled star superimposed on a background of silver rays, with the hammer and sickle emblem in the center. The inscription “ОТЕЧЕСТВЕННАЯ ВОЙНА” (Patriotic War) is inscribed on a white enameled circle around the central emblem. The Second Class version is typically made of silver and aluminum, while the First Class is made of silver and gold, though variations exist. This medal represents bravery and service during one of the most critical periods in Soviet history.
